It's that time again.

As the colder months approach, our evenings will continue to shorten.

Next month, the clocks will move back an hour, making nights fall even earlier.

Here’s everything you need to go:

When will it happen this year?

The clocks go back one hour at 2 am on Sunday, October 26

All EU member states move the clocks back on the last Sunday in October and forward again on the last Sunday in March. In North America, Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

In Australia, the system isn’t applied uniformly. Queensland and Western Australia don’t observe DST at all, meaning travelers can cross state lines and suddenly be in a different time zone.

Why do we do it?

Turning the clocks back in autumn provides brighter mornings, while the spring change delivers longer evenings.

What do you need to do?

Most people in Ireland don’t need to worry about manually changing the time anymore. Smartphones and most digital devices automatically adjust, though traditional clocks and watches will still need to be reset by hand.

Wasn’t the EU supposed to end this?

Back in 2019, the EU Parliament voted to scrap DST from 2021, after a survey revealed 70% of people wanted it gone.

The last clock change was set for spring 2021, but the plan was shelved during the Covid-19 crisis. Since then, little progress has been made. The European Commission has confirmed it does not intend to bring forward a new proposal, meaning seasonal clock changes will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
